Monster Master – Dragon Warrior Monsters

Dragon Warrior Monsters is a side spin-off series of the much loved original Dragon Quest game. Developed and published by Square Enix, it puts the player into a fantasy/medieval world full of dragons, magic and ancient knights. If you loved (or loved at least) the classic Dragon Quest games, then you’ll love Dragon Warrior Monsters. For those who didn’t play them, don’t worry – this isn’t a complete remake of those games. Instead, this is a new story written from scratch, which means all the classic quests and areas are still there, but in a whole new style and setting.

This is where the similarities end! Unlike the original game, where you had to do all the quests, fight monsters, explore the map and find items and weapons by talking to people, in this release you will instead be playing the game by yourself. That’s right, you start by choosing your character and then going into battle (the same way you would in the original), but instead of fighting other players you’re fighting against randomly generated dragon warriors. This is, for me, one of the biggest differences – doing battle against these creatures is actually quite challenging, as they are much more powerful than the other characters in the game.

In addition to this, the entire goal of the game is to complete the game on every floor (basically, the goal is to kill all the dragon warriors). If you fail, then you lose the level and have to replay the area, but if you win then you get rewarded with more money, experience points and items (just like the original game). The main difference here is that in the free release you’re not able to choose any of your character’s gender – only the monster master can do that. This may not be important to you, as the game is otherwise about the relationship between the hero and his/her companion, so to me it doesn’t really matter at all.
