A number of you – perhaps most of you – have been fans of dragons quest for some time. BJ, for example, started playing in the Nintendo Power giveaway back in 1989, and Austin got his start in 2016. Whether you’re a veteran or new to the series, Dragon Quest Your Story has something for everyone.
Dragon Quest is a role-playing game created by Yuji Horii in 1986 for the Famicom, using inspiration from previous RPGs like Wizardry and Ultima to create an accessible entry point into the genre. Horii sought to make a simpler interface, with more emphasis on storytelling and emotional involvement than on gameplay. The result was a huge success, with over one million copies sold in the first six months. A combination of Horii’s articles in Shonen Jump and the star power of Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama helped propel the game to global fame.
The story of every Dragon Quest game revolves around a hero who is prophesied to be the savior for his or her world. The hero must battle a new evil that has arisen, usually some version of the Dragonlord that wishes to enslave or destroy humanity. Unlike many RPGs, which have tended toward more science fiction in recent years, Dragon Quest games have often kept a more traditional fantasy look with medieval technology and trappings.
This particular game was the middle entry in the Zenithian Trilogy, and centered on a hero having to defeat mad bishop Ladja in order to get the shard of Nimzo from the Dragonlord. It marked the first change to the series’ art style, as it moved away from pixel sprites to 3D character models and environments. Also, the hero could recruit monsters to his party for the first time, a feature that would become a mainstay in most subsequent Dragon Quest titles.
