Dragons of Middle Earth

The dragons of middle earth were powerful creatures, as feared as they were admired. They were long-lived, cunning, and possessing subtle intelligence and great physical strength. Their bodies were covered in almost impenetrable scales except on their undersides. They lusted after treasure, and were known to sleep on hoards of gold. They were prone to anger when any of their precious goods were stolen.

Unlike other creatures of mythology such as giants or giant serpents, Tolkien’s dragons were intelligent and were capable of speech. They were often modeled after the dragons of European legend, such as Glaurung, who had features of the Beowulf dragon and Fafnir from Norse mythology.

Dragons were bred creatures, so their numbers could fluctuate from time to time. They were most often found in the cold northern lands of Middle-earth, where they inhabited mountainous regions. Some were wingless, such as the Long-worms and spark-dragons (see below). Others had wings, including the great winged dragons Glaurung and Ancalagon.

The dragons of middle earth were also able to breath fire, which was one of the reasons they were so feared. Their fire was hot enough to melt four of the seven rings gifted to the Dwarves by Thorin Oakenshield. In addition, their scales were a fiery red color and some of them had venomous fangs. They were also a great threat to the kingdom of the Dwarves in the mountains of Wilderland. The king of the dragons, Scatha the Worm, was a major problem for the Dwarves and Men in the north of Middle-earth, because he loved to steal their treasure.
