Dragons are typically known for soaring through the air with huge wings and breathing fire. However, did you know that there are also dragons that live in the sea? Unlike the Loch Ness Monster or Godzilla, these creatures are actually real! They are called sea dragons and they can blend in with their surroundings by camouflaging themselves. They do this by using two small fins located on the ridge of their necks and near their tails. These fins minutely oscillate, making them almost transparent and enabling sea dragons to move sedately through the water and look like they are floating seaweed.
These sea creatures are most often found in Australia. They can grow to lengths of 18 inches (45 cm). They are similar to a seahorse but they are more elongated and have fewer leaf-like appendages. They are also very good swimmers and can hide in seaweed or kelp beds to evade predators. Sea dragons are also sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females have different characteristics. Males have larger heads, jowls and crests on the neck and back while females have a more yellow to orange area near their throat.
These aquatic dragons can be quite a sight to see. Their gorgeous blue, cyan and teal scales are beautiful against the backdrop of the ocean. They use their long tails to help them climb and can whip their tails to defend themselves. They can eat algae, fish, crustaceans and other aquatic creatures. Sadly, these dragons are being threatened by humans as they are vulnerable to pollution. They are also being hunted for their skin and meat.
