The Dragon Quest series of role-playing games has been a staple of the genre for decades. First released on the NES in 1983, creator Yuji Horii sought to create a game that would appeal to a broad range of gamers by emphasizing storytelling and emotional involvement while simplifying gameplay to make it more intuitive. He also introduced a number of innovations including battery-backed RAM save games, larger character sprites and pseudo-Elizabethan English dialogue. The series has had a number of spinoffs and is well-known for its unique monsters, the Slime which became the series mascot, and recurring themes such as love and death.
The latest mobile entry in the franchise, Dragon Quest Tact, has been shut down just over two years after launch. Players will be able to finish out their existing quests and events but can no longer buy gems or metal cards in the game or renew their monthly Passport. The news comes alongside Square Enix’s other recent mobile closures like Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, Echoes of Mana and Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights.
Tact is a tactical RPG that features grid-based movement and positioning as well as standard turn-based combat. The game offers a variety of cartoony monsters to collect and pit against each other in a mix of PvP and PvE missions. It is also possible to use collected materials to upgrade the ranks & stats of owned monsters. There are also a number of different magic books that can be used to enhance specific skills.
