The first Dragon Age was a massive hit, bringing in a host of new fans thanks to a compelling story, great characters and world building. It also spawned fan favourites like Wynn, the mummy, and Morrigan, the most impractically dressed swamp witch history has ever seen. It was a great start to what is now an unshakeable franchise pillar.
It’s an enthralling story that spans across the continent of Thedas, which includes rugged wilderness and glistening cities steeped in savage combat and secret magic. Your decisions will shape the fate of Thedas and its people. It’s a world on the edge of destruction and it needs you to lead it.
Dragon Age II has a similar premise to the original, but with more of an edge. It starts off with a civil war between the Fereldan and Orlais nobility after Teyrn Loghain Mac Tir deserts at the Battle of Ostagar, leading to the destruction of Lothering, the deaths of King Cailan Theirin and Grey Warden Commander Duncan, and the near-destruction of the Grey Warden order.
The game’s story is told through a combination of dialogue, cutscenes and gameplay, with the latter being a series of missions that you can complete to advance the narrative. These include completing side-quests, killing enemies and engaging in combat. The gameplay is fast-paced and enjoyable, but the use of wave-based enemies, recycled assets and environments was criticised by some. Despite this, the story and characters were still very well-received by players and media outlets.
